While Marta was great, Neymar disappointed in Brazil’s opening match against South Africa.

Lloyd slotted home the only goal in Belo Horizonte after Tobin Heath’s initial effort came back off the post.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo marked her 200th global appearance for the United States of America with an important save from Marie-Laure Delie in the first half.

However, the hostility did not seem to affect her performance and she saved well from Marie Laure Delie in the first half and thwarted the same player with 15 minutes remaining to preserve the clean sheet.

French captain Wendie Renard was outstanding for France and hit the bar with a header early in the match.

Colombia and New Zealand, who play each other later on Saturday, both have zero points. “Initially the pressure was all about performing well and promoting women’s football”, said Brazil coach Vadao.

As well as Brazil, holders US and Canada have also already qualified for the quarter-finals ahead of the final round of games while seven teams are still in contention for the remaining five places.

“Never forget that US are the world champions, [and] the current Olympic champions”.

Gu Yasha and Tan Ruyin got the goals for China to secure their first win in Group E. China are in second place in the table on three points.

Janine Beckie got two of Canada’s three goals in a first-half spree before Mavis Chirandu grabbed a consolation goal with four minutes remaining.

The hosts’ women have been the most impressive side in the tournament as Brazil tore Sweden apart to go in 3-0 up at the break.

Germany, the two-time world champions, can snatch top spot in group F when they face the Canadians at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia.
