The USA has stepped up its strikes on IS oil assets since the Paris attacks in an effort to cripple its finances, in a campaign known as “Tidal Wave II”.
Last Wednesday, Russian General Staff spokesman Colonel General Andrey Kartapolov said: “In just the first few days, our aviation has destroyed 500 fuel tanker trucks, which greatly reduced illegal oil export capabilities of the militants and, accordingly, their income from oil smuggling”.
The planes dropped leaflets warning the drivers to “run immediately or you will be killed”, according to the officials, adding that similar leaflets were dropped during us airstrikes last week that destroyed 116 oil tanker trucks. Meanwhile, the United States released details of new strikes over the weekend that destroyed nearly 300 oil trucks and a crude collection point, part of its ongoing strategy to target the militant group’s oil production, a significant source of its financing.
U.S. Army Col. Steve Warren in Baghdad said it appears no civilians were hurt in Saturday’s attacks.
On Sunday, US-led coalition forces struck five ISIS positions in Syria and 11 positions in Iraq.
Russian Federation also has begun targeting the Islamic State’s oil infrastructure with airstrikes, including attacks on tanker trucks.
IS controls almost all of Syria’s oil fields, concentrated in the east of the country, producing a few 30,000 barrels a day, along with one field in Iraq.
