MTV News asked Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Michael Malarkey, Candice Accola and Graham this very question when they stopped by our San Diego Comic-Con studio on Saturday (July 11), and lucky for us, the answer was as good as we could have hoped for.

The actor also reportedly made comparisons on his love for Elena and his love for Caroline. He said that it was incredibly well done, as it sends the important message that Elena is still there, one way or another – she’s not actually dead. He also said that the writers managed to go back to the first two seasons of the series, which he believes to be some of the most exciting periods of the show.
“The Vampire Diaries” star continued, “I mean she changes her house into a rescue and a foster home for so many animals and has taken so much time and energy and money of her own with her family, particularly her mom, to foster animals and make sure that they are safe”. Enzo will need to figure out which side he is on during the season.
He also teased that the final scene of season 6 hinted at how the next season would begin.
There is always a chance that Damon’s grief pushed him into a downward spiral and he is taking his revenge out on the innocent townsfolk. Which side will he land on as the Salvatore brothers fight against their mother and the new vampire witches she has resurrected?
On a lighter note, Stefan and Caroline will continue with their push-pull relationship when the show returns. At the end of The Vampire Diaries season 6, Stefan said he would wait as long as it took for Caroline. You never know when characters are going to leave, you never know when they’re going to come back.
“Six seasons is a nice slow burn, but I’m excited to see these characters together”, she said. “Maybe in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey”… “Usually, it’s so immediate, especially on our series… but in real life, it’s the person you can be yourself in front of in the most dorky way”. “Both of these characters have seen the worst in each other and they still like each other and I think that’s really cool and that’s really special”.
