‘The Walking Dead’ is back, blazing
You’re warned of full spoilers for Sunday’s Walking Dead premiere from here on out, but where the hour only appeared to claim Jessie, Ron, Sam, Negan’s men and the Wolf, did you happen to notice one series regular suffering a significant wound amid all the carnage? Then there is also Carl, who accidentally got shot in the eye by Ron before Michonne killed the latter by piercing his heart from the back with her sword after Ron attempted to kill Rick. We’ll be discussing some specific scenes from Season 6, Episode 9, “No Way Out” in the post below so in order to protect yourself, here’s a topical spoiler warning.

Episode 9 picks up from the mid-season finale prelude wherein Daryl, Sasha and Abraham encounter a badass biker gang on the road. One of the bullets hits Carl in the eye and Rick rushes him over to the infirmary.
“I felt like it would never happen and then when [showrunner] Scott Gimple sat down with me and told me the whole story line of season six, I was really excited to hear that Carl was going to lose his eye”.
Sam (Major Dodson) doesn’t actually exist in the comics because Jessie (Alexandra Breckenridge) only has one son, Ron (Austin Abrams). “And it’s about the idea of, do you go back out and run, or do you find a way to take a stand?” Like Carol, Michonne fulfills a function on the show that no other character does, and I can’t imagine her being killed off this season. “I’ve been handed several of those moments in episodes that I’ve directed”, says Nicotero.
As of this publishing, Carl is still alive in the graphic novels, although Robert Kirkman could change that status with a single page.
Amazon usually makes new episodes live the morning after their airtime, so fans can expect the “No Way Out” episode to be available on February 15. Carl calls out to Rick.

After most of the walkers in Alexandria have been neutralized, Rick sat by Carl’s bed. Even long-lasting characters like Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) had their redemption moment this week, and it was great to see everyone band together to fight off the invading walkers in one of the few moments of triumph we’ll ever see on this show. Comic fans know Carl’s injury becomes vital to his relationship with future villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) on the series, something Nicotero also pointed out. That’s a lot to take in and much like yourself Andrew Lincoln has some feels about those deaths, Negan, and this season’s finale.
