The Wall Street Journal: Russia becomes point of contention with Clinton, Trump

“And it’s yet more proof why Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit and totally unqualified to be commander in chief”.

Asked if she believed Putin wanted Trump in the White House, Clinton said she was not going to jump to that conclusion.

Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential nominee, Tim Kaine, on Friday dived into the role of attack dog, slamming Donald Trump’s comments about Russian hacking. Slovenia, which has joined sanctions against Russian Federation for its annexation of Crimea and meddling in Ukraine, has been very careful to portray Putin’s visit on Saturday as strictly informal and not against the European Union policies. But if the interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that ran Sunday morning is any indication, Trump doesn’t.

In the ABC interview, Trump at first said that Putin would not invade Ukraine: “He’s not going into Ukraine, OK?” “He’s not gonna go into Ukraine, all right?” “You can mark it down. You can put it down”, Trump said.

Stephanopoulos responded: “Well, he’s already there, isn’t he?”

TRUMP: OK― well, he’s there in a certain way. “But I’m not there”.

“This is scary stuff”, Clinton campaign spokesman Jake Sullivan said in a statement.

The Clinton campaign pointed to the exchange to question what Trump knows about the subject and argued that the Republican is repeating Putin’s talking points on Crimea.

Russian Federation told the United States on Thursday to get to the bottom of of its own hacking scandal.

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing”, Trump said at a press conference Wednesday, referring to emails sent and received by Hillary Clinton when she was secretary of state. He then accused the U.S. State Department of financially supporting the protests that drew tens of thousands of people to the streets of Moscow to demand free elections and an end to Putin’s rule.

He added: “You know the people of Crimea, from what I’ve heard, would rather be with Russian Federation than where they were, and you have to look at that also”.

Julianne Smith, a former deputy national security adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, said Trump doesn’t seem to grasp the complexities of the USA relationship with Russian Federation, reflecting both inexperience and a lack of strong advisers.

In an unrelated though similar stumble for Clinton, last Friday, Wikileaks released emails from Clinton staffers plotting to undermine the Campaign of her opponent in the primaries, Bernie Sanders.

“What I think unites Putin and Trump is an extremely cynical look at the world and the human condition, and I think this could, forgive me the pun, trump any other disagreements they may have”, he says.

Clinton laid blame for the hack directly on Russia: “We know that Russian intelligence services, which are part of the Russian government — which is under the firm control of Vladimir Putin – hacked into the DNC”.
