Apple wasn’t the only one with big news yesterday: Sony has announced the PS4 Pro and the lighter PS4.

Whereas I always prefer framerate over resolution, even I have to admit I can’t get too mad at this- playing a game in native 4K is going to be pretty awesome. At 30% reduced size, the new model PS4 offers great value for the gamer and will also join the HDR revolution from next week.

“Yeah, my personal versus company feel [is that] HDR is really the future for me and for the studio”, said Gyrling. Here, we discuss what’s new with the slim PS4, along with how much it’ll cost and where to buy it.

Naughty Dog lead programmer Christian Gyrling quickly agreed.

“I mean, for a long time now they’ve wanted to show these colors but we’ve had to do things like tone mapping and various other things”, said Gyrling. The tone mapping is giving an artistic feel but it also artificially brings down all the contrast to what’s acceptable on current TVs. We think about [Xbox One and Scorpio] as part of the same family.

This support for existing consoles will be good for both HDR gaming and video streaming. In theory, I’m the target audience: The enthusiast player willing to put out more cash for better image quality and do the research into the technical jargon surrounding console presentation standards. “I believe it will depend on the thinking of each licensee”.

From the looks of it, that should make multiplatform games on the Xbox One S and PlayStation 4 Pro run smoother and crisper on Sony’s upgraded console, although we’ll have to wait for the side-by-side comparison to be 100% sure.
