The world mourns baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra

Among the exhibits were a complete set of 27 Yankee championship rings, including 10 he won as a player. “It’s obviously a sad day but a day to celebrate 90 extraordinary years and a real part of our culture”. And he will in all of us. It was Kaline’s second full season with the Tigers, and it’s hard to imagine how he lost.

It would be hard for Rodriguez to explain the paternal Berra to those who haven’t met him, he said. To me he was a dear friend and mentor.

Aside from working in a shoe factory prior to playing baseball, Berra was a pitchman for casual footwear brand PF Flyers.

In the grueling role of catcher, Berra caught the only flawless game in World Series history in 1956.

Berra finished his baseball career in 1992 as a coach for the Houston Astros.

“Where do you want to be buried when you die?” his wife is said to have once asked Yogi. Berra was on the ground during the Normandy Invasion on D-Day and fought in several other battles as well.

The Hall of Fame catcher was known as much for his Yogi-isms as he was for his prowess on the baseball diamond. In addition to inspiring his teammates, players, and fans, Berra likely inspired the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character Yogi Bear. JEFF ZELEVANSKY/REUTERS Berra poses at the Yogi Berra Museum in Upper Montclair, New Jersey during a 2007 visit.

Then there are the Yogisms. “He epitomized what it meant to be a sportsman and a citizen, with a big heart, competitive spirit, and a selfless desire to open baseball to everyone, no matter their background”. Though slight in stature, he was a giant in the most significant of ways through his service to his country, compassion for others and genuine enthusiasm for the game he loved. “It ain’t over ’til it’s over”. The catcher is renowned for such sayings as “It ain’t over till it’s over” and “It’s déjà vu all over again“. “‘If there’s a fork in the road, take it.’ So I did”.

And on they would go throughout the decades. “He is not only good at baseball but he has continuously improved English language”. They bring a smile to our face whenever we hear them.

His early years on the field weren’t so successful.

“He never forgot who he was”. He was an even better man as well. The Yogi Berra Museum was first to break the news, which was confirmed by Major League Baseball.
