‘The X Files’: The show’s return is ‘not a victory lap’

With new episodes directed by Chris Carter, James Wong, Darin Morgan and Glen Morgan, THE X-FILES debuts with a two-night premiere on January 24th at 10 p.m. ET/PT with a second episode airing on January 25th at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Also returning for the 6-episode event series are Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes, William B. Davis as The Smoking Man, Sheila Larken as Margaret Scully as well as Bruce Harwood, Dean Haglund and Tom Braidwood as The Long Gunmen. “I think you needed to get back into the characters’ lives, their quest, where they are, where their relationship is and where their professional lives are”, Carter said. After teasing the reboot at MIPCOM in Cannes and at Comic-Con in NY, the network has now given fans a glimpse of the revival’s first episode before it airs. She eventually understood how “fortunate I was to have played such an iconic character”, adding that a role like that for which she’lln be forever associated “could have been something else that I hated, or had bad reviews”.

The three were joined on the TCA panel by Joel McHale, who plays Tad O’Malley, a conservative talk show host who has strong beliefs regarding government conspiracies. “I’ve cherry-picked some of the things that are frightening to me and if even one of them comes true, it’ll be a very bad thing for America… it’s an interesting time to be shining lights into the darkness”.

Anderson commented that the chemistry was something she and Duchovny had “from the beginning”. “We got very lucky”. But, it’s admittedly pretty satisfying to see Mulder and Scully horrify an alien for once.

“There are over 500 conspiracy sites on the Internet. Everything is out in the open”, he said. “We’re living in a time now where there’s a tremendous amount of distrust of authority, the government, even the media”.
