The Yankees give up on Ivan Nova at deadline

At the buzzer of the Major League Baseball trade deadline Monday, the final domino fell as Brian Cashman shipped starting pitcher Ivan Nova to the Pirates.

After the Nova deal, Pirates traded pitcher Jon Niese to the New York Mets in exchange for Antonio Bastardo.

With that said, a Pirates team desperately trying to make up ground in the NL playoff race made the move in order to bolster a questionable starting staff.

NY continued selling its major league pieces Monday after trading Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs and Andrew Miller to the Indians on Saturday.

Nova has been with the Yankees since 2004 when he was taken as an amateur free agent from the Dominican Republic.

Nova is 7-6 with a 4.90 ERA in 15 starts and six relief appearances, his inconsistency among the reasons the Yankees have struggled for much of this season.
