Lenny’s “adoptive mother”, Sister Mary (Diane Keaton) arrives at the Vatican and is quickly appointed personal secretary to her former charge, leaving the cardinals to wonder whether she is puppet master or put upon. So this is The Godfather – except, outrageously, it really is the Godfather.
Jens Richter, CEO of FremantleMedia International, commented, “The Young Pope has been the topic of much excitement with TV executives and global audiences alike all wanting to get a glimpse at this extraordinary series”.
According to a review by the Hollywood Reporter, the show is quick to portray the pope as cunning and manipulative; one scene in an early episode depicts Pope Pius tempting his confessor with the promise of power if the priest will break the seal of confession and reveal the sins of certain cardinals.
FremantleMedia is giving the series its global launch at the Venice worldwide Film Festival today.
He agreed that his pope was a stark contrast to the approach of the Vatican’s current pontiff, Pope Francis, but said there was no reason the Catholic church could not have his type of leader in future.
Paolo Sorrentino, the filmmaker responsible for the series, describes the program as highlighting “the clear signs of God’s existence” and His “absence”.
“But if they watch to the end they will see it is a work that tackles with curiosity and honesty, not with a desire to provoke. the contradictions and difficulties, and fascinating lives of clergy, nuns and the pope”, he said.
The series will tell “the controversial story of the beginning of Pius XIII’s Pontificate, born Lenny Belardo”.
Jude Law says he was taken aback when asked to play Sorrentino’s pope was posted in Entertainment of TheNews International – https://www.thenews.com.pk on September 04, 2016 and was last updated on September 04, 2016.
The Young Pope airs in October exclusively on Sky Atlantic.
