There’s Another Republican Running for President

The dramatic race for the White House took a new twist on Monday (Aug 8) when former Central Intelligence Agency counterterrorism officer Evan McMullin made a decision to join the race as a third-party conservative alternative to Republican candidate Donald Trump.

McMullin, however, is certain to face hurdles in getting on the ballot in several states, due to his late entry into the race and, presently at least, non-existent support.

Sources said Wilson was in Washington on Sunday meeting with members of McMullin’s prospective campaign – which includes some who were involved in a group called Better for America, which has been pushing an independent presidential bid.

McMullin has frequently characterized Trump as an “authoritarian” on Twitter.

His campaign is backed by the group Better for America, which for months has been searching for a candidate to offer as an alternative to the outspoken NY billionaire who, to the chagrin of the GOP establishment, emerged as the party’s standard bearer against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

The McMullin campaign has released an official statement to supporters stressing the obscure policy director’s credentials for the White House.

Politico noted that McMullin has never held an elected position.

McMullin has been vocal about Trump in the past, speaking out against the nominee on his Twitter account.

Former CIA officer Evan McMullin announced today he’s running an independent bid for the presidency. “Instead, we have been left with two candidates who are fundamentally unfit for the profound responsibilities they seek”, McMullin said in a letter announcing his candidacy.

After graduating with an MBA from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, McMullin worked briefly for Goldman Sachs before beginning work on Capitol Hill.

He has been a senior adviser on national security issues for the House Committee on Foreign Affairs for three years.
