With three new releases, the newcomers hoped to dethrone the current box office champion The Jungle Book from its lofty throne.
“The Huntsman: Winter’s War”, which originally opened on a previous weekend as well, came in second, grossing more than $9 million.
The R-rated comedy about the duo trying to recover a beloved cat named Keanu received 75% positive critical ratings on the aggregate review siteRottenTomatoes.com and a flat B grade from audiences on CinemaScore.
Disney’s Captain America: Civil War debuted on 283 screens last week, grossing a whopping $13.8 million to leave studio stablemate The Jungle Book in the dust. Civil War gave a preview of its might in 37 worldwide territories over the weekend, with record openings in Mexico, Brazil and the Philippines.
Final weekend numbers are expected Monday. The comedy, starring Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and Anthony Anderson, has earned $44.7 million in its three weeks in release.
Distantly behind that was ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ in the #2 spot. ‘The Boss, ‘ $4.2 million. 9. He has brought together another terrific cast list as Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, and Kate Hudson are just some of the names that are on board. “Barber Shop: The Next Cut”, $6.1 million; 6. The movie took $9,35 million and narrowly missed out on the second spot. Some analysts had anticipated up to US$15 million in initial ticket sales.
To be clear, “The Jungle Book” isn’t just falling into first place; it’s taking it by a mile – despite having a lot of new competition.
