Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today appealed to youth in turbulent Kashmir to shun violence and at the same time said security forces will have to act in self-defence if they are attacked.
Immediately after the statement was released, Omar tweeted, “we welcome the statement of the Hon PM @narendramodi ji and look forward to working together to find a lasting solution to problems of J&K”. “We should develop nationalistic feelings among the people in Kashmir”, he said on the unrest in the Valley.
Emerging after a 75-minute-long meeting, Omar, former Chief Minister of the state, told reporters that the Prime Minister listened to “us with patience and accepted our memorandum”.
According to the Indian Express, in a memorandum to Mukherjee, the group said: “The failure of the central government to acknowledge that the issue in Kashmir is largely of a political nature has worsened the already volatile situation”.
This “has further exacerbated the situation and created an unprecedented sense of disaffection and disenchantment – especially among the youth”, he said.
The National Conference president welcomed the Prime Minister’s statement and extended his support for bringing normalcy in the state. But the Prime Minister, on the other hand, for two years has been using three words Insaniyat, Jamooriyat, Kashmiriyat, the essence of which we think he does not understand.
“We hope that our efforts will bear some fruits”. Police officials have made a decision to maintain a curfew throughout the entire Kashmir valley to maintain law and order.
New Delhi has accused Islamabad of fuelling unrest in Kashmir triggered by the killing of a young separatist, Burhan Wani, on July 8.
At least 65 people have so far been killed during clashes between protesters and Indian forces.
Hundreds of the injured have partially or fully lost their eyesight after being hit by pellet guns – a unsafe mob control weapons used in Kashmir.

“The Chief Minister thanked the people of Jammu for maintaining peace and harmony at a time the valley was going through hard times. In 2008 and 2010, they gave the new face of stone pelting to their proxy war and that is what is happening in the valley this time also”. Sources informed that some members during the course of the interaction flagged the issue of prime minister not mentioning Kashmir during his Independence Day speech.
