There’s only one place you can stream Prince’s music catalog

“Have you ever been in a room where there’s 17 ringtones going off at once?” It’s a home video of a baby dancing, and there’s some music in the background.

Prince later explained: “I had to search deep within my heart and spirit and I wanted to make a change and move to a new plateau in my life”.

Last summer Spotify users looking to jam out to a little Prince instead found a message on his page notifying them that his songs had been pulled from the music streaming service.

Prince was one of the first major musicians to sell his music online – his 1997 album, “Crystal Ball”, was first released exclusively on the Internet.

In his commercial heyday of the ’80s and ’90s, his sound was everywhere – not just in his own megahits, but in radio staples he wrote for Sinead O’Connor (“Nothing Compares 2 U”), The Bangles (“Manic Monday”), Chaka Khan (“I Feel For You“) and many others. “A strong spirit transcends rules”, Prince once said – and nobody’s spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative. In the ’90s, he was involved in a bitter split from Warner Bros. At the time, his music is on both iTunes and Spotify. In protest, he began to appear publicly with the word “Slave” etched on the side of his face.

“I couldn’t believe my ears”, said Gore, who went on to form the Parents Music Resource Center and launch an effort that led to warning labels on albums. He changed his name to that of a symbol and was referred to, variously, as “Symbol”, “Squiggle” or “the Artist Formerly Known as Prince”.

Spotify responded by tweeting: “Unfortunately we do not have Prince’s catalog”.

In a July 2010 interview with Daily Mirror reporter Peter Willis, Prince says he’s releasing his album “20TEN” to Daily Mirror readers as a CD for free.

Famously, Prince fought with Warner Brothers over the terms of his publishing contract throughout the ’90s. In 2006, he won a Webby Lifetime Achievement award for how he used the Internet to distribute his songs, including his NPG Music Club, which at the time of the award offered seven full-length Prince albums unavailable anywhere else. More than a “once in a lifetime” artist…

And I don’t mean pay $9.99 for a Spotify or Apple Music subscription.

But, he added: “Who knows if he even has a will?” In it, Prince, of all people, urges a promiscuous girl to “slow down”.

Of course, that was never an issue for Prince.

Most know of him through the mega hit songs like Kiss, Purple Rain, When Doves Cry and 1999, created during his golden hits period of 1985-1992 – when there seemed to be no stopping this charting juggernaut.
