Theresa May appointed Prime Minister

“From the introduction of same sex marriage to taking people on low wages out of income tax altogether David Cameron has led a one nation government and it is in that spirit that I also plan to lead”, she added. “I came into Downing Street to confront our problems as a country and lead people through hard decisions so that together we could reach better times”.

The new Prime Minister, Britain’s second woman to hold the post, is expected to unveil the core of her Cabinet later this evening.

Larry, who has over 60,000 followers on Twitter, will stay at 10 Downing Street through the leadership change as Theresa May takes over as Prime Minister.

Her husband Philip was standing behind her as she made her first public speech in the role, highlighting the “precious bond” between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and between “every one of us”.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street after being appointed by the Queen, she said it would be her mission to “build a better Britain”.

The 59-year-old will be in charge of negotiating Britain’s exit from the European Union. But she faces mounting pressure to begin talks on Brexit with European Union officials sooner than she had planned.

May became the prime-minister-in-waiting when on Monday her rival to lead the U.K.’s Conservative Party, Andrea Leadsom, dropped out of the race in a shock move.

May had advocated waiting until the end of this year to invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which sets the rules for a nation leaving the EU. “After all, as I once said, I was the future once”, he said. “I think she’s a cautious person, and the British political establishment needs to come to terms with this massive decision”.

In his final PMQs, Cameron congratulated May on succeeding him while poking fun at the Labour Party for never having had a female prime minister.

British outgoing Prime Minister David Cameron and his family members leave 10 Downing Street in London, Britain on July 13, 2016.

I will miss the roar of the crowd, I will miss the barbs from the opposition, but I will be willing you on.

May is officially the second female Prime Minister, after paying the traditional visit to Queen Elizabeth.

Flanked by his wife and children, the PM said Britain was “much stronger” than when he took over.

Cameron stepped down after Britons rejected his entreaties and voted in a June 23 referendum to quit the European Union, weakening the 28-nation bloc and creating huge economic uncertainty, including likely damage to trade and investment.
