In his final question and answer session, Cameron said he would “miss the roar of the crowd and the barbs from the opposition” that came with the job. I don’t mean Tory members or even voters.

“Mr. Speaker, this morning I had meetings with ministerial colleagues and others”, cracked the outgoing leader. I hope you will all keep at it.

Some of the most passionate lines were about this: “let me finish by saying this: the spirit of service is one of this country’s most remarkable qualities”, and “for me politics has always been bout public service in the national interest”.

The Cabinet Office said yesterday that Larry will continue his work when the new Prime Minister.

“In a different way, I have seen that same spirit of service in the incredible contributions of countless volunteers in communities up and down our country who are making our society bigger and stronger”, he said.

May spoke outside No 10 shortly after emerging from Buckingham Palace, where she had paid the traditional visit to the Queen to be invited to form a government.

But Mr Robertson then blasted Mr Cameron and the Government for trying to take Scotland out of the European Union “against the wishes of Scottish voters”.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – who is facing his own calls to resign – praised Cameron for his legacy on equal marriage.

In the pair’s final exchange, Mr Cameron sought to put a final rumour to bed – that he does not love Larry the Downing Street cat.

“I came into Downing Street to confront our problems as a country and lead people through hard decisions so we could reach better times”, he said.

He then produced a large picture of himself and Larry cuddling in an armchair.

“And as we leave for the last time, my only wish is continued success for this great country that I love so very much”.

Meanwhile, Danny Kinahan, the Ulster Unionist MP for South Antrim, suggested Mr Cameron could fill another leadership position once he has left Number 10.

“Under his leadership the country’s economy has grown by 13 per cent and a record number of fellow Britons are in work”, she said.

“There’s the England football team, there’s Top Gear, there’s even across the big pond a role that needs filling”.

“And I’m sure he would like to acknowledge that it was labour votes that helped him to get it through on that occasion”, he said.

Larry, who was re-homed from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2011, was said to have a “strong predatory drive” that suggested he would be well-suited to the task of rat catching.
