Theresa May Becomes Britain’s Official Prime Minister, Meets Queen
Hammond has been appointed Chancellor in Theresa May’s first cabinet appointment.

The referendum itself was a result of the in-fighting within the Conservative Party – between hardliners who felt Mr Cameron was too liberal for their liking.
The fate of Cabinet Office minister Matthew Hancock, another Osborne ally, was unclear last night, but his job appeared to have been given to former health minister Ben Gummer. “I look forward to a fruitful working relationship and to welcoming you to the European Council”.
He also congratulated Foreign Secretary Hammond on his new role as Treasury chief.
Another hardline critic of the EU, Liam Fox, becomes minister for worldwide trade, reflecting the need to forge new alliances if Britain leaves the EU single market. Her new cabinet, full of those who led the Brexit charge, reflects her new priorities.
Fox was the first of five Tory leadership candidates to be eliminated in the race to replace David Cameron – which May won.
Veteran Conservative euroskeptic David Davis has been appointed to lead Britain’s exit talks with the European Union.
After filling half a dozen of the top jobs Wednesday, including Boris Johnson as secretary of foreign affairs, May made a slew of new appointments Thursday. New finance minister Mr Hammond, foreign minister under Mr Cameron, warned this week it could take up to six years to resolve all the negotiating issues. Davis has sparred with May over the powers of Britain’s spy agencies.
That means two of the top four jobs in the government are held by women.
Theresa May is the second female Prime Minister to cross the threshold of 10 Downing Street, after Margaret Thatcher.
Defence minister Michael Fallon also kept his post.
May has rung the changes in appointing her first 6 ministers, including the surprise nomination of Brexit campaign figurehead Boris Johnson as foreign secretary and other “Leave” campaigners filling posts.
May was determined and forceful in her appeal to become leader of the Conservative Party, focusing on unity, prosperity for everyone and transitioning from the EU.
Theresa May’s Cabinet: Who’s in – and who’s out? The blond, Latin-speaking Johnson – a leader of the campaign for a British exit, or Brexit – had aspired to be prime minister himself before his bid failed because of party infighting. “I will not negotiate with Britain in a hostile mood”. The massive challenge of the Brexit negotiations makes it even more important that May learns how to let go and delegate.
In his final question and answer session in the House of Commons, Cameron said he would “miss the roar of the crowd and the barbs from the opposition” that came with the job he has held since 2010.
To May, who succeeded Cameron on Wednesday, Putin “stressed the conviction that the preservation and augmentation of the significant potential of Russian-British cooperation in various fields that has been accumulated for a long time is in the fundamental interests of the two countries”.
Israel’s prime minister says he has sent his congratulations to Britain’s new leader Theresa May.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve our country as prime minister over these last six years, and to serve as leader of my party for nearly 11 years”, he said outside 10 Downing St., accompanied by his wife Samantha and his children – 12-year-old Nancy, 10-year-old Elwen and 5-year-old Florence.
That came after Mrs May on Wednesday evening sacked Mr Osborne as Chancellor, telling him he was not wanted in her new Government.
But the ex-SAS soldier turned down Cameron’s offer to join his collation government, preferring to stay on the backbenches, earning a reputation as a serial rebel in the years that followed.
The Prime Minister is also aware of the challenging prospect of Brexit negotiations with the European Union.
She “emphasized her commitment to delivering the will of the British people to leave the European Union”, her office said.
Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the EU’s executive Commission, wished May “every success in the task ahead”.
The conservative also said she would fight injustice and work on behalf of the poor, women, and minorities.
Yet when the stars capsized and Cameron took his inexplicable gamble and lost the Brexit vote as well as his leadership, it was May who, turtle-like, moved in to pick up the pieces.
