Theresa May becomes first female British prime minister since Thatcher
By convention the Queen is above party politics and does not personally choose the prime minister, so Mr Cameron’s last duty was to advise her to invite Theresa May to form the next administration.

She is also expected to meet Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon in the coming days, with Sturgeon telling a press conference Wednesday that Brexit “does not apply to Scotland, as Scotland voted differently in the referendum”.
Soon afterward the palace released a photo of May curtseying to the monarch at the palace.
The tomcat was a sentimental topic of conversation in Cameron’s final appearance in Parliament as prime minister.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve our country as prime minister over these last six years, and to serve as leader of my party for nearly 11 years”, he said, accompanied by his wife Samantha and his children – 12-year-old Nancy, 10-year-old Elwen and 5-year-old Florence.
Before resigning, Cameron delivered remarks outside 10 Downing Street, saying, “It’s not been an easy journey, and of course we’ve not got every decision right, but I do believe that today our country is much stronger”.
May had supported Britain’s remaining in the European Union, but tepidly, and she promised to respect the outcome of the June 23 vote.
The new Prime Minister believes that numerous people who voted in the recent referendum to leave the European Union were motivated by anger against the U.K.’s elites. “I will miss the barbs from the opposition”.
Earlier, Mr Cameron took Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) for the final time, telling MPs he would “miss the roar of the crowd”.
He ended by referring to a jibe he directed at then-Prime Minister Tony Blair more than a decade ago: “He was the future once”.
David Cameron will take to the Despatch Box in the House of Commons for his last session of questions as PM in the House of Commons before the historic shift of power takes place.
He was a strong backer of the successful “leave” side in Britain’s European Union referendum campaign. From the introduction of same-sex marriage, to taking people on low wages out of income tax altogether; David Cameron has led a one-nation government, and it is in that spirit that I also plan to lead.
Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron, his wife Samantha and their children Nancy (left), Florence and Elwen, leave 10 Downing Street, in London on Wednesday. Cameron will continue on as a member of Parliament.
Schulz was alluding to Cameron’s decision to call the June 23 referendum on Britain’s European Union membership – in which people voted to leave – in order to settle a dispute with the eurosceptic wing of party. She has the tough task of calming the country and global financial markets after the upheaval that followed the referendum.
“It means we believe in a union not just between the nations of the United Kingdom but between all of our citizens – every one of us – whoever we are and wherever we’re from”, she said.
In her first public speech as UK Prime Minister, Theresa May outlined the priorities facing the new government under her leadership which include unifying a country that has been divided by the EU Referendum debate.
May has rung the changes in appointing her first 6 ministers, including the surprise nomination of Brexit campaign figurehead Boris Johnson as foreign secretary and other “Leave” campaigners filling posts.
Other prominent “Leave” campaigners were also rewarded.
“I don’t detect Theresa May being an impulsive person”, Travers said.
In phone conversations with the leaders of Germany, France and Ireland, who called to wish her well as Britain’s second-ever woman prime minister, May underlined her commitment to a British exit, or Brexit.
Expectedly, she briefly addressed her countrymen before meeting top officials, including Cabinet Secretary Sir Jeremy Heyward, and received a full national security and defence briefing.

Earlier, told the Telegraph he came into Downing Street to “lead people through hard decisions so together we could reach better times”, adding “as I leave today, I hope people will see a stronger country, a thriving economy, and more chances to get on in life”.
