Theresa May becomes new British PM after meeting Queen at Buckingham Palace
“I have just been to Buckingham Palace where Her Majesty the Queen has asked me to form a new Government and I accepted”.

The United States congratulated May and said it is confident in her ability to lead Britain through the Brexit negotiations. I believe Theresa will provide a strong and stable leadership in fullfilling the conservative manifesto of which we were elected. He offered something of a political philosophy, saying, “I believe that politics is about public service in the national interest” and quelled rumors that he does not like Larry the Cat, rebutting with a resounding: “I do!” and holding up a photo of himself sitting on an armchair with Larry on his lap.
He added: “Above all, I want to thank Samantha, the love of my life”.
“Nothing is really impossible if you put your mind to it. I will miss the barbs of the opposition”, Cameron said.
How did we get here?
May herself had sided with Cameron in trying to keep Britain inside the European Union, so she now need to reach out to the winning “Leave” side in order to heal divisions and show her commitment to respecting the popular vote. But after the only other candidate for the job, Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom, dropped out of the contest, it left May as the sole candidate, leading to a swift transition.
After a startlingly swift transfer of power, Theresa May became Britain’s prime minister on Wednesday, promising to honor last month’s referendum to leave the European Union but also to heal divisions that the vote exposed, and to preside over an economy that benefits everyone, not just the “privileged few”.
Johnson led the Brexit camp to victory, antagonizing many European Union leaders in the process, but dismayed supporters by backing out of the race to succeed Cameron at the last minute.
May has a daunting job as prime minister, facing pressure to start Brexit negotiations with the European Union, salvage a plummeting economy and unite a divided nation.
How does the handover work?
May was headed to Buckingham Palace to make the job title official.
May also paid tribute to her predecessor, David Cameron, saying he had been “a great modern prime minister”.
What lies ahead for May?
“However, the composition of the new Cabinet shows that the focus is less on the future of the country but more about satisfying the internal cohesion of the Tory Party”.
At some point during the final meeting Mr Cameron’s family was introduced to the Queen, who earlier in the day toured the new air ambulance base at Cambridge airport where her grandson the Duke of Cambridge works.
The Russian leader thanked Cameron for his cooperation when he was in charge of the government and expressed hope that his “vast political experience would be in demand in the future both in Great Britain and on the global level”.
Cameron made a decision to step down after six years as premier following the June 23 referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union, in which 17.4 million people voted to leave the bloc.

Not to mention a Conservative Party whose infighting over Europe prompted Cameron to call a referendum in the first place – much to his spectacular downfall.
