Theresa May becomes United Kingdoms second woman Prime Minister

EU leaders, however, are pressuring Britain to open formal exit talks sooner and warning that the United Kingdom can not have access to the single European market of 500 million people without accepting the free movement of EU citizens, a sticking point for many pro-Brexit Britons. He will chiefly be remembered for proposing the referendum in the first place and then spectacularly failing to clinch it.

Her spokesperson said the pair “agreed that cooperation in the spirit of the proven friendly relations between both countries should be continued, including in the forthcoming negotiations on Britain’s exit from the European Union”.

She put her vision into practice, appointing Mr. Johnson and two other prominent Brexit supporters to senior cabinet post: David Davis as the new Brexit minister and Liam Fox as the country’s first Secretary of State for International Trade.

David Cameron ceremonially tendered his resignation as Britain’s prime minister to Queen Elizabeth II on Wednesday, less than three weeks after the electorate defied his wishes and voted to abandon the European Union, sending the country into uncharted political and economic territory.

Prominent conservatives who campaigned to get Britain out of the European Union were given the task of seeing the job through, starting with former London Mayor Boris Johnson, who was named foreign secretary, in the day’s most surprising move.

French Foreign Minister Ayrault was blunt: “I am not at all anxious about Boris Johnson, but. during the campaign he lied a lot to the British people and now it is he who has his back against the wall”. The United States said it was looking forward to working with him.

The White House is pushing back on suggestions that her selection of Boris Johnson as foreign minister will be problematic for the U.S. Johnson had previously described Obama as a “part-Kenyan” who had an “ancestral dislike of the British empire”.

“The negotiating strategy has to be properly designed, and there is some serious consultation to be done first”, he wrote in a blog published Monday.

Trying to reclaim his legacy from Brexit, Cameron said his government had cut the deficit, overseen economic growth and legalized same-sex marriage.

Outside Downing Street, a group of demonstrators chanted: ‘What do we want? Hammond had served as foreign secretary in Cameron’s cabinet, but he has had previous experience of a Treasury role.

She replaced him with Philip Hammond, the former foreign secretary.

European Union officials are congratulating new British Prime Minister Theresa May and saying that Britain and Brussels will have to move soon to address the consequences of the country’s vote to leave the bloc.

Hammond acknowledged that investment in Britain had been shaken since the referendum result.

Amber Rudd, 52, a former British energy minister, will play a key role in the country’s approach to immigration, the issue which is widely believed to have swayed the European Union vote to Leave.

Others in line for significant roles include energy minister Amber Rudd, worldwide development minister Justine Greening, who recently came out as an openly gay minister, and home office minister Karen Bradley. She was only given a front bench job a year ago when she became Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. She has suggested Scotland might hold another referendum on independence because it voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU.

Separately, May appointed former Defence Secretary Liam Fox, another pro-Brexit campaigner, as secretary of state for global trade.

“But if Boris Johnson can realize his potential. he will send that shot of adrenaline through the Foreign Office, through our diplomacy, that is so necessary right now”, Meyer told Sky News.

The three other cabinet members announced so far are Michael Fallon, who will remain as defense secretary, Amber Rudd as the new home secretary, and Liam Fox as the secretary of worldwide trade.
