Theresa May to become British PM

After Andrea Leadsom announced her withdrawal from the Conservative Party leadership race, leaving Home Secretary Theresa May to succeed David Cameron as Prime Minister on Wednesday, long-term Tory voters and members are proverbially tearing up their membership cards and joining the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) en masse.

Corbyn has widespread support among party members but has lost the confidence of at least three quarters of Labour MPs.

After being confirmed as new Tory leader, Mrs May was left with around 48 hours to put together a new team to lead the Government, with Chancellor George Osborne’s position thought to be under threat after the historic vote to leave the European Union.

Lewis, who became housing minister in July 2014, has been a key supporter of May and was often seen at the front of her campaign.

Leadsom, 53, apologized to May on Monday after suggesting in an interview with the Times of London that being a mother made her a better candidate for prime minister than May, who has no children. Brexit means Brexit and we’re going to make a success of it.

May, 59, will become the U.K.’s first female prime minister since Margaret Thatcher, known as the “Iron Lady”, governed from 1979 to 1990. “And third we need a strong, new, positive vision for the future of our country, a vision of a country that works not for the privileged few, but works for every one of us”. She said government should be better able to oppose predatory takeovers, citing Pfizer’s attempted takeover of AstraZeneca two years ago. But Cameron was so anti-Brexit that he didn’t think he could carry out what the people decided, so to his credit he got out of the way, and May will now have the task of doing so.
