The group of young men were walking outside of Irish Nobleman Pub on the city’s West Side Monday morning before spotting a laptop in a pickup truck.
The pub said that the men likely did not know that the dog was in the backseat with all the windows rolled up, but by breaking the window, they likely saved the dog’s life after it had been left out in the heat by its owner.
“If the window wasn’t broken the dog would probably be dead”, said Declan Morgan, owner of the Irish Nobleman Pub.
Morgan says the cameras shows that the dog sat in the hot truck for 20 minutes before the four men broke the window.
The German Shepherd was left in the vehicle around 9 a.m. on a morning when temperatures reached into the high 80s. Security footage from the Irish Nobleman Pub shows the group checking out a truck on the street.
“I truly believe that if they didn’t break the window, the dog would have died”, Morgan said.
The car’s owner arrived at the scene about an hour after he initially parked the vehicle and eventually let the dog out of the auto and onto the sidewalk. “I said to the guy, ‘You can’t do it.’ He was like, ‘Oh, I had the air conditioning on before I got out of the auto'”. But a video shared to Facebook this week has several wondering.
The posts had received about 10,000 hits, Morgan said, and the video led his phone to ring constantly Wednesday with calls from media across the country.
According to the National Weather Service, the heat index for 9:51 a.m. on Monday was about 82 degrees.

On an 80 degree day, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise to well over 100 with the windows closed.
