UPDATE: Later in the show, Chris Rock revealed that his stunt had raised $65,243.
“You don’t have to buy them for yourself, you can buy them for troops in the military”, said Molly Miller, a girl scout brownie.
With a variety of cookies on hand, the girls were there as the Academy Awards host told the audience that he wanted them to reach into their “millionaire pockets” because he wanted them to buy his daughter’s girl scout cookies. “We had no idea of the public’s interest in wanting more Girl Scout cookies after watching all these movie stars nibbling on these treats during the awards”.
Taking a page out of Ellen DeGeneres’ book from two years ago, Rock incorporated food and real life people into one of his bits.
Celebrities that made orders included Kate Winslet, Michael B. Jordan, Tina Fey, Charlize Theron, Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Mindy Kaling.
Girl Scouts have been selling cookies to fund themselves for almost 100 years, making the first batches in their own homes, according to the organization.
“Leo, you made $30 million!” the host yelled at Leonardo DiCaprio, who had provided the evening’s biggest moment as he finally won his much sought-after Oscar for Best Actor. “Look at my babies up there”, he said, pointing to a photo of his daughters’ Los Angeles troop on screen.
Girl scouts Tamarah Jenkins and Molly and Emma Miller are getting creative with their cookie selling.
