Things To Watch At The Republican Convention This Week
Rob Portman is “upset” with Gov. John Kasich and believes the governor is hurting his re-election campaign. He also says the senator believes Trump is helping his re-election prospects.

Speaking at the White House, President Barack Obama said that with the Republican convention this week followed next week by the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, political rhetoric would likely be more overheated than usual. Campaign manager Paul Manafort called Kasich “petulant” and said the governor was “embarrassing” his party in his home state.
After several hours of outraged speeches and fevered anger at the Republican National Convention Monday night, presumptive candidate Donald Trump’s wife, Melania, used her speech to sound an unexpectedly calm and conciliatory note, calling for cooperation, unity, respect and love among “all Americans”.
Practically drowning them out were chants of “USA, USA” by Trump supporters and party loyalists.
In June, she said, “I would like to be able to endorse Donald Trump, but he really has to change the approach that he has taken”. Former presidential candidates Ted Cruz, Chris Christie, Scott Walker and Marco Rubio (by video) are on the list, as are a handful of members of Congress. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan will also speak. It was their final attempt at withholding the nomination from Trump. Williams said during a morning news briefing that Cleveland police commanders will inform those who choose to open carry what their responsibilities are under OH law.
But Hardy Billington, a Missouri delegate, who is pro-Trump said, “I think by the end of this convention, we’ll be totally united”.
Kasich, who has pushed programs to heal rifts between communities and police after several fatal police shootings, said those bonds must be “reset and rebuilt”.
“The racism in this city, we can’t let them just sweep it under the rug”, Schnur said.
But Manafort insists the number of holdouts has been overstated.
True to form, Trump himself provided the first surprise of the week, announcing Monday morning he was headed to Cleveland later in the day to introduce his wife Melania on the first night of speeches.
The Trump campaign won’t say who will speak when at the GOP convention in Cleveland this week.
“Donald gets things done”, Melania Trump said, adding that she believes the country is under performing.
Hundreds of people have gathered at a peaceful rally along a major bridge near downtown Cleveland the day before the Republican National Convention gets underway.
In the main event of the evening, Mrs. Trump gave a personal speech that detailed her growing up in Slovenia and praised her husband.
Anti-Trump delegates were said to be considering mounting another long-shot challenge at the convention on Tuesday, perhaps by trying to force a vote on letting delegates back any candidate they choose during the nominating roll call.
Christie told reporters Sunday night that he didn’t lobby for the position and was honored to be considered.
The disorganized nature of the running mate rollout – in which Trump failed to fully project the power of the partnership – had some Republicans anxious that they could see more of the same at Cleveland.
The Cleveland police chief says that security planners considered whether a ban on the open carry of firearms could be enforced during this week’s Republican National Convention but learned that police had no authority to override state law.
“In writing her handsome speech, Melania’s team of writers took notes on her life’s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking”, Trump spokesman Jason Miller said.

The Republican National Convention is set to kick off as the nation reels from another deadly shooting and dissident delegates stage a longshot, last-gasp effort to deny Donald Trump the GOP nomination for president. Some delegates left the convention floor after the convention’s presiding officer, Arkansas Rep. Steve Womack, shut down the opponents by saying the rules had been approved by a voice vote.
