“I think it’s just been equal love, you know, for NY and then the crowd for me since I reached the finals in 2009”.

Caroline Wozniacki, a two-time runner-up in Queens and one-time finisher in the city’s marathon, ran all over Anastasija Sevastova, 6-0, 6-2, after Sevastova rolled her right ankle, stumbled and fell to the ground in the second game of the first set.

“I always believe in myself, no matter what my ranking”, said Wozniacki, who used to be No. 1.

“She’s had a great year so she will be tough to beat, but I’m going to do my best”, Wozniacki told reporters. Yet she struggled with it when she needed it the most on Sunday, just 58 percent of her first-serve points in the first set. So I feel real sorry for her, ” Wozniacki said in an on-court interview.

The woman nicknamed “Sunshine” for her positive disposition played the role of buzz kill today blunting Keys’ superior power and using her quickness and consistency to drain 33 unforced errors while committing just seven errors of her own.

The two have met once before with Wozniacki winning easily in straight sets at the 2011 Australian Open. Moving nimbly at the net and employing a two-handed backhand behind the baseline, Wozniacki chased down balls and challenged Sevastova to find angles past her. And as in that victory over the French Open champ, she finally closed out the win with a service break.

Caroline Wozniacki, of Denmark, reacts after beating Monica Niculescu, of Romania, during the third round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, in NY. “Because when she’s on fire, she’s on fire, and there is not much you can do about it. It’s something I’ll need to figure out at the end of the year”, Vinci said in Italian, with a laugh. After losing the first set of her opening night match Monday, Aug. 29 and being two points from being eliminated, she rebounded to beat Alison Riske 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

She has only lost one set throughout the Open though which came all the way back in the first round against Taylor Townsend. The match truly looks even-handed as Keys has been tested in NY while Wozniacki’s ranking doesn’t reflect her level of play at the moment. “It’s a tournament that I love”. Kerber would be No. 1 at the end of this tournament if she wins it or makes the final and Serena Williams doesn’t. I’m like, Well, I get another day; I get another chance. “I was depressed and it just wasn’t fun anymore, but now I’m back”, said Sevastova when asked why she turned her back on the sport. And my main thing was just like, Just go for your shots. I know how she is playing.

Wozniacki’s game and attitude have more of a serrated edge now, and she says age and suffering some hard knocks have a lot to do with it. “Caroline played great”, Sevastova said.

In the semi-final, she will face Angelique Kerber, who will become the world no. 1 if Serena Williams doesn’t win the title.
