Accolades for “Star Trek” are filling the internet on the 50th anniversary of the television show’s premiere back in 1966, and now the pope’s newspaper has joined the chorus of hosannas for one of the most popular franchises in entertainment history.
Some Star Trek and sci-fi fans will also be greeted on Facebook by the USS Enterprise and have the option to add a custom Star Trek frame to their profile picture. The new Star Trek reactions include a sparkly thumbs-up (Like), Vulcan salute (Love), Captain Kirk (Haha), Spock (Wow), Geordi (Sad), and a Klingon (Angry). Spock’s face is used for “Wow”, which seems odd considering that would be the last reaction Spock would ever have.
Facebook users who have liked the official Star Trek page on the site are getting a few special treats to mark the half-century milestone.
“This project has truly been a labor of love”. While it’s not the first time Facebook has changed up its Reactions, she notes that Facebook might test more of these elements in future “community and moment-driven events like this one”.
And with a new original series called “Star Trek Discovery” set to hit the web in 2017, Star Trek continues to live long and prosper.
The show – whose first episode aired September 8, 1966 – began during the Cold War.
