Third Grand Slam title for Stan Wawrinka after US Open win

Stan Wawrinka became the oldest US Open men’s champion in 46 years when he defeated World No.1 Novak Djokovic to claim a third Grand Slam title here Sunday. Britain’s Murray has won 12, while Djokovic, Federer and Nadal are all in double figures for grand slam titles. Wawrinka then climbed into the crowd to hug his coach, Magnus Norman, and the rest of his team. “I am completely empty”, said No. 3 Wawrinka, who noted during the trophy ceremony that Sunday was the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “I’m not good enough to start and say, ‘OK, I’m going to win a Grand Slam this year.’ No”.

“Today I knew it would be a really tough battle again playing the number one player, Novak Djokovic, who always pushes you to play your best tennis if you want to beat him. There was so much emotion with the crowd, the atmosphere, the stadium, it’s been an awesome night”. “It’s been unbelievable night again”.

Fifth-ranked Nadal said the 31-year-old from Switzerland was capable of matching any of the top players on the world circuit after taking the title on Sunday in NY.

Wawrinka also won titles at the Australian Open in 2014 and French Open past year.

Stanislas Wawrinka admits that he was “shaking” with nerves and crying in the locker room prior to his US Open final win over Novak Djokovic.

He also joined an exclusive club of men who have won three of the four major titles, a list that includes Sampras, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe, among others.

The Swiss is now only missing top honours at Wimbledon in order to complete the prestigious career grand slam.

At one point, Djokovic turned to Wawrinka as he as receiving treatment and said, “Sorry man, couldn’t stand”. “My goal is to give everything I have and be the best I can be”, he was quoted as saying by Sport24. I’m really happy with that.

“We both felt the demanding match that we played today, but he [Wawrinka] came out on top, ” he said.

This year her quest for a record-breaking seventh U.S. Open title was again undone in the semis, this time by Pliskova, who arrived at Flushing Meadows as a grand slam underachiever who had never been beyond the third round of any major. When Djokovic was granted a medical timeout ahead of Wawrinka’s serve – which is not allowed – Wawrinka only voiced his displeasure briefly. “That’s probably one of the best shots in the game”, Djokovic said.

Djoker dropped out of the Cincinnati Open following his loss at the Summer Games with a wrist injury, and it seems unlikely he was 100 percent for the U.S. Open.

“A few weeks before U.S. Open, I was thinking should I come or not because I struggled physically”, Djokovic said.

Then he showed just how much he has left in the tank, capping a draining fortnight with a championship victory over world number one Djokovic. “I would definitely accept it”.
