This coming Saturday, July 30th, White will attempt to make “vinyl history” by playing the first record in space.

A statement posted to the Third Man Records website reveals that the label has custom-built a “space-proof turntable attached to a high-altitude balloon”, named the Icarus Craft, with help from designer Kevin Carrico. The selection is described as “a moving arrangement of Sagan’s sagacious words, culled from his magnificent Cosmos series, previously pressed and distributed as a 7-inch in [Third Man’s] first year of operation, 2009″, and was chosen because it was the label’s three millionth record pressed.
Literal “launch parties” have already been announced in Detroit and Nashville, commencing at 10am on 30 July. The vehicle that will allow this spinning bit of plastic to ascend into space is called the Icarus Craft. There will also be live performances at each location, as well as Q&A with Carrico in Detroit and a display of the record in question in Nashville.

The launch will be streamed online (details also TBA), but to get into the party and get your hands on limited-edition 12-inch singles and other goodies, you’ll need to purchase a Stellar Ticket. And we’re coming close to it. For some reason, it seems like it’s a nice long-term goal to attach to, because it sort of means everything and means nothing at the same time.
