Third-time lucky with winner Mourinho for United

Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes new Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has the required personality and ability to return the club to its former glories, as reported by The Sun.

Aside Sir Alex Ferguson who spent 27 years as manager (1986 to 2013), United have battled to get a manager in Ferguson’s calibre and philosophy that will guide the club to a Premier League and Champions League success.

David Moyes, Ferguson’s hand-picked successor, lasted 10 months and Louis van Gaal was sacked on Monday after an underwhelming two years in charge.

Jose Mourinho says it is a “special honour” to have signed for Manchester United after the club confirmed his appointment yesterday morning.

Events unfolded in dramatic fashion this campaign as Jose Mourinho was ousted from Chelsea mid-season and Louis van Gaal’s credibility as a top manager slowly vanished. The Old Trafford club remains arguably the biggest global brand in the world with revenue from over 70 commercial partners driving record profits.

“Jose will have a massive effect at United”.

Jose Mourinho wants to hit the ground running at Manchester United this week by announcing a major striker signing after confirmation that 18-year-old England striker Marcus Rashford has signed a new contract. With Mourinho and his agent, Jorge Mendes, on board United will not have to worry about attracting top players and whether he spends big money or not one would imagine the new manager’s approach will be less scattergun and more targeted than that of his immediate predecessor. Sparks flew between the two when at the helms of Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain from 2010 to 2012. But with that move proving a disaster and Van Gaal faring little better, United’s powerbrokers have chose to take a chance on Mourinho, despite his turbulent reputation. “I think what the fans are expecting me to say is that I want to win”. Mourinho is undoubtedly pragmatic and is a win-at-all-costs type of manager who has been known to “park the bus”, but some of his teams have entertained over the years.

“I know what they can give me and also I think they know what I can give them”. In Chelsea’s case, he’s done it twice.

Although Mourinho’s appointment isn’t making everyone happy, it should make for great football, considering former Chelsea man is now in the same city as his arch enemy, Pep Guardiola. Mourinho should get similar financial support to make additions to a squad that has some obvious deficiencies.
