Thirty-five years ago today, John Lennon was shot four times in the back outside of the Dakota building in New York City by Mark David Chapman.

Jack Douglas, Lennon’s producer, said he and the Lennons had been at a midtown studio called the Record Plant and that Lennon left at 10:30 p.m. Lennon said he was going to get something to eat and go home, Douglas said.
Lennon, who together with Paul McCartney fronted the most influential rock band in history, would be 75 years old had he lived. When Lennon and Ono finally arrived home, Lennon met with some fans to sign autographs.

Police said they had a suspect and described him as “a screwball” with no apparent motive for shooting Lennon.
Police arrested a suspect, “described as a local screwball”, minutes after the shooting and charged him with Lennon’s murder. His killer, John Mark Chapman, received 20 years to life in prison. He was denied parole past year.
Chapman turned 60 this year.
He was rushed in a police auto to St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he died.

The death of John Lennon triggered a grief and mourning period that circled the Earth. Opposite the residence (where his widow, Yoko Ono, still lives) sits Strawberry Fields, a permanent tribute to the musician and campaigner on the west side of Central Park.
His wife, Yoko Ono, who is understood to have witnessed the attack, was with him.
