This Caribbean Airline Has Banned In-Flight Use Of Pontentially Explosive Samsung Phones

In a Facebook post on Monday, PAL said it started prohibiting the charging and use of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices on all flights on September 9, “in compliance with the directive of the International Air Transport Association”. The Galaxy Note 7 unit must also not be stowed in any checked baggage, the budget carrier said.

Shares of tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) fell to their lowest level in almost two months on Monday, hurt by worries about the fallout from a recall of its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone.

Samsung looks to be taking a hard-line on recalling its Galaxy Note 7, with plans to remotely deactivate any handsets not returned by 30 September.

“For customers who already have Galaxy Note7 devices, we now ask that you power down your device and return to using your previous phone”, the statement added. We are expediting replacement devices so that they can be provided through the exchange program as conveniently as possible and in compliance with related regulations. In the interim, consumers can return their Note 7 for another device.

Samsung recalled 2.5 million phones last week after reports emerged of the risky defect.

This follows reports of the device exploding during or after charging, and its recall by the manufacturers.

Meanwhile, the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has also prohibited the use of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones during flights operated by the country’s national carriers, reported WAM.
