Glass bridge in China – If you are afraid of heights, stay away.

The world’s highest and longest glass-bottom bridge opened on Saturday in China’s spectacular Zhangjiajie-the inspiration for the USA blockbuster movie Avatar.

The 430-metre long, six metre wide bridge, paved with 99 panes of three-layer transparent glasses, hangs between two steep cliffs 300 metres above the ground, Xinhua news agency reported.

Another visitor, Wang Min, told AFP: “I wanted to feel awe-inspired by this bridge”.

Tourists can walk across the bridge, designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan. “But I’m not afraid-it seems safe!”

To demonstrate the strength of the bridge, several media communication operations have been organized in recent months: a journalist particularly struck the bridge with a sledgehammer and a sedan loaded passengers drove on it, each time without affecting its structure. “But be suspended at 300 m high, it is a unique experience”, said Chenglu Lin who came with his colleagues.

Local authorities have said that one of the summits in Zhangjiajie Park inspired the floating mountain which appears in the American blockbuster Avatar.

Reassured by stress tests administered by SUVs and sledgehammers in recent months, 8,000 courageous tourists have crossed the bridge each day since it’s been opened.
