Clinton stated that the Republican presidential contender is “becoming ISIS’s best recruiter, ” with the group attracting people by showing videos of him. Mr Sanders has a modest poll lead in New Hampshire, but the former Secretary of State remains the overwhelming favourite for the nomination, running an average of more than 25 per cent ahead of Mr Sanders in national polls, according to Real Clear Politics. Clinton and Sanders were joined on stage by former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who has struggled to be a factor in the race.

Clinton was quick to jump on Trump’s anti-Muslim backlash, and strongly condemned any Islamophobic rhetoric.

In the previous debates, Sanders hammered Clinton for her close to ties to campaign donors from Wall Street banks and wealthy hedge fund investors.

Front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton took the more hawkish and interventionist approach, advocating that the US should be aggressive in helping to resolve disputes around the world, even if that involves sending special forces or overthrowing dictators.

“We should move on because I don’t think the American people are all that interested in this”, she said after accepting her rival’s apology. O’Malley attempted to pile on, calling Mrs Clinton’s relationship with the financial sector, “shameful”. She comes out of the the debate in a good position.

On Syria, O’Malley and Sanders were also aligned against Mrs Clinton, arguing that her focus on toppling Bashar al-Assad was counterproductive to the fight against Islamic State.
