This new mod crosses the original Doom and No Man’s Sky

Over the course of three weeks, Robert Prest has been working on a Doom (well, Doom 2) mod that attempts to recreate much of the core experience of No Man’s Sky. No Guy’s Sky is a mod of the classic 1993 shooter Doom. Using code from another one of his projects, “DoomZ”, Prest created a spacecraft that looks beautifully bad, with dice hanging from the dashboard and “boldly go where no man has gone before” misspelled on the display in front of him.

No Man’s Sky, the space game developed by Hello Games released last month on PC and PlayStation 4, is one of the more controversial releases of the year, due to the final game missing features that were promised by the team before release.

Everything in No Guy’s Sky is randomly generated, including “scenery, sky, floor, plans and aliens”, says Prest on his website (where those who want to give it a try can find installation instructions). Prest also included the mining tool and jump-pack from the original game, allowing players to quickly bounce around planets and collect resources.

This mod features nearly everything from the game it takes inspiration from: the ability to jump into a spaceship to fly to procedurally generated planets and then jump out and mine anything and everything. There’s even a center of the universe, helpfully marked with a billboard reading “CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE”.

Overall, this looks to be an incredibly impressive mod that you can download here if you are so inclined to do so.
