During the development of its GT supercar, the American automaker reached out to glass manufacturer Corning to see if it could create a Gorilla Glass windshield.
A traditional automotive laminated windshield consists of two layers of annealed glass sandwiched around a clear, thermoplastic interlayer binding agent.
Gorilla Glass hybrid windshield is thinner than traditional laminate glass, and will improve Ford GT handling by lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity The new hybrid glass uses a multilayer approach – a pane of toughened automotive-grade formed hybrid acts as the strengthened inner layer, an advanced noise-absorbing thermoplastic interlayer is in the center, and an annealed glass serves as the outer layer.
The Ford GT will have a safety feature with its Gorilla Glass windshield.
To demonstrate its strength, Ford engineers loaded a cannon with a 1.75-inch hail ball and fired it at 55 miles per hour into a piece of Gorilla Glass.
An earlier version of Gorilla Glass has been on cars in the past, including on about 100 1968 Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda racing cars.
Initially the hybrid glass was used in Ford’s lightweight concept vehicle, an experiment in many lightweight materials. It was brought into commercial use when Apple asked Corning for a thin, tough glass that was used on the new iPhone.
Gorilla Glass doesn’t work everywhere.
Lightweight glass isn’t the only option for saving weight.

One barrier to the wider adoption of Gorilla Glass is expense. (5.4 kg) of weight. Each auto is expected to cost about $400,000 and deliver about 600 horsepower. Ford is saving around 12 pounds on the GT, so that means a $24 to $48 premium per vehicle.
