It was more than your typical birthday celebration Thursday as the National Park Service celebrated its centennial at the Great Overland Station. Ever since the first United States national park was founded in Yellowstone in 1872, numerous other parks have mushroomed into what is now the National Park Service, founded by the then president Woodrow Wilson.

The superintendent of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial says the work to renovate the ground around the Gateway Arch could be an example for other national parks as they deal with the possibility of under-funding by the federal government. Additional Celebration of the Sun activities are scheduled from 2:30 to 4 p.m. each day of the festival, with extra solar viewing from 10 a.m.to noon on Sunday.
