This Week In College Football: Spurrier Leaves Fingerprints All Over The Sport
Spurrier said it was unlikely he’d ever be a head coach in college again because of the recruiting aspect. Always one to do things his way, Spurrier believed he needed to step aside, and no one was going to change his mind.

“He’s a really bright football coach and he’ll have a bright future”.
Spurrier was in the middle of his 11th season at South Carolina and while the Gamecocks are struggling, university officials praised his accomplishments and impact he has had on the football program.
Dykes was an assistant at Kentucky in 1997 and “99 when Spurrier was flying high as coach at Florida and spoke fondly of the “Old Ball Coach” and those “Fun and Gun” Gators” teams he directed.
But as opposing coaches learned for decades, you never underestimate Spurrier. Following that 1989 quip, I understood the buzz among journalists as they awaited the emergence of Spurrier.
Steve asked Corey about how the Maryland head coaching job stacks up against other coaching jobs in college football. He did hope to consult for a team one day and promised players he’d still see them in the weight room and around town. While players seem to be OK at present, they have to realize that the man they signed to play for is gone – and while Elliott is no stranger, what’s going to change?
Of course, that video was when Elliott was the offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator. ” That’s exactly the kind of person South Carolina needs as its next football coach”. They will play Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium. “He very quickly and passionately accepted, and we’re excited about all the characteristics and the integrity that he brings to this program and he has for a number of years”, Tanner said.
A quarter century later the HBC has likely reached the end of the road that ultimately took him to the University of South Carolina.
And you can also throw in a 47-41 pro record – 12-20 in a two-year stint with the NFL Washington franchise and 35-21 in three years leading the Tampa Bay Bandits of the late, great United States Football League. “We’ve got a dang good team”.
You can talk about the offensive genius at the three schools, and the 1996 national title in Florida, but the legend of Spurrier centers on Duke.

Things looked pretty bleak for Duke’s season that night. “I think the steady decline has been tough on him”. The offense looked better against Virginia than it had in a 28-6 loss at Tennessee the week before – and at 1-3, it looked like even Spurrier could not end Duke’s 27-year drought from a bowl game.
