#ThisIsACoup: Global Anger Erupts Over Germany’s Harsh Austerity Demands

The two-day meeting resulted in a four-page document leaked earlier on Saturday, controversially mentioning that if Greece refuses the conditions for talks on a new bailout, it would have to “temporarily” leave the Eurozone.

“Tsipras had to concede on nearly every point”, Demetrios Efstathiou, head of CEEMEA Strategy at ICBC Standard Bank, said in a note Monday.

As European officials stayed up all night on Sunday trying to hammer out a deal that would keep Greece in the Euro, the hashtag #ThisIsACoup was trending on Twitter. He tweeted: “The Eurogroup proposal is a covert coup d’etat against the Greek people”.

The hashtag quickly gained momentum and before long was being used by analysts, commentators and economists, including Paul Krugman, a well-known critic of the austerity measures advocated by Europe. This also includes changes to legislation already passed by the Syriza government since it took power this year.

The term is topping Twitter.com’s list of hashtag trends.

The outrage kicked up a notch after a new list of demands emerged that would require Greece to pass a series of reforms by Wednesday to receive much-needed cash to pay its upcoming debts.

The economics professor begins by describing the Eurogroup’s demands as “madness” – and continues, “this goes beyond harsh into pure vindictiveness, complete destruction of national sovereignty, and no hope of relief” – “it’s a grotesque betrayal of everything the European project was supposed to stand for”.
