Thongchai Jaidee holds his nerve to claim European Open title

Overnight leader Jaidee posted four birdies in his bogey-free round of 67 on Sunday to finish on 17 under, one shot ahead of Storm, and secure his seventh European Tour title.

After being pipped to the title, Storm remains on one European Tour win, achieved at the Open de France eight years ago.

It curtailed his hopes of taking his first victory since the French Open in 2007.

‘It is a very special week for me, ‘ Jaidee said.

He is on 13 under par for the tournament with English duo Ross Fisher and Graeme Storm back in second spot alongside Pelle Edberg of Sweden. “Seven under is very good for me today; I’ve not had seven under for a long time”.

The result though should be good enough for Storm to move into the top 110 on the European Tour’s Order of Merit and retain the Hartlepool Mail Sports Personality of the Year’s place for the 2016 season. “I had a really good back nine on the first day and played very steady golf the next two days”.

Jaidee felt the greens played into his hands on Saturday.

“I liked the golf course”. I just couldn’t make the putts. “The course is not very long so being in position is important”.

Storm, playing in the penultimate group, birdied the third, ninth, 10th, 12th and 15th holes in a super last round. That was the main thing at the start of the week and today as well. “Maybe I could have holed a few more putts and the title would be mine, but congratulations to Thongchai, he made a great up and down on the last”.

“I had a loose tee shot but still had a chance for birdie and then 16 was a poor tee shot, and I was unlucky with the lie”, said Fisher. “Putting is a big part of the game, but my putter was ice cold this week”.
