In a move to bolster support among veterans, Republican Donald Trump joined a leather-jacket-wearing, motorcycle-riding crowd in Washington on Sunday to honor fighters who served in foreign wars and advocate for those still missing in action.

“I think it’s important for Donald Trump to express his appreciation for veterans, not John McCain, but veterans who were incarcerated as prisoners of war”. He also angered some veterans previous year when he said he liked “people who weren’t captured” in wars.

Trump gave his standard stump speech, but the crowd had been primed by a one-term congressman from New York, John LeBoutillier, who insisted in his own speech that hundreds of American prisoners of war were still being held in Vietnam.

Trump later sought to walk back his comments, stating that he never questioned whether McCain was a war hero but declining to apologize outright. “What he said about me, John McCain, that’s fine”.

Trump’s comments on McCain were also on the minds of many at the event, including John LeBoutillier, a former NY congressman who spoke at the event. “Any country that has soft leaders is going to get taken over”.

“You have all these people on the roads and they’re all waving and going insane”, he said. “I thought this would be like Dr Martin Luther King, where the people would be lined up from here all the way to the Washington monument, right?”

Also attending Rolling Thunder were two retirees from New Jersey, Tom Gadosky and his companion, Marney Pratt, both 67.

Muller didn’t like the comments, but said Trump was getting at a truth about McCain.

“In many cases illegal immigrants are taken much better care [of] by this country than our veterans and that’s not going to happen”, Trump told a crowd of United States veterans in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

In January 2016, Trump stated that he had raised $6 million for veterans’ charities during a fundraiser in Des Moines, Iowa. Some veterans said it was unclear when he was speaking. He won’t deport as many people as he’d like to. “I don’t require any fix of that”, McCain told CNN earlier in May.
