The winter solstice is the annual event which marks the point where the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun.
Don’t worry if you miss this one though, you don’t have long to wait – the next solstice in our solar system is on the 3 of January when the northern summer solstice on Mars occurs.
Here are 5 things you may not have known about the Winter Solstice.
The sun will rise over Stonehenge at 8.04am and a spokesman from English Heritage, which looks after the prehistoric monument, said they expect a similar number of people to travel to the Wiltshire site as past year, when around 5,000 people made their way to the south of England for the event.
Because oceans and land take a long time to cool down and warm up, winter’s coldest days usually occur after the Winter Solstice while summer’s hottest days usually happen after the Summer Solstice.
As a result of the northern hemisphere leaning away from the sun, Tuesday will see the fewest hours of sunlight in a day.
Winter solstice is most commonly on December 21.
Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied across cultures, but many have held recognition of rebirth, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations around that time.
“The midwinter sun sets between the two upright stones of the great trilithon”.
It is said the winter solstice was more important to the people who built Stonehenge than the summer solstice.
Paganism is described as a group of religions and spiritual traditions based on a worship of nature and the planet. “This is what applies around the world although in Cyprus it gets hotter much earlier”.

Druidism is a spiritual practise with no sacred text (such as the Bible or Koran), meaning that Druid’s beliefs often differ from person to person.
