Thousands hit by floods in Britain, PM Cameron calls emergency meet

Environment Secretary Liz Truss stated to the House of Commons yesterday that in the light of this extreme weather, DEFRA is going to look at flood modelling and see if it is fit for goal.

“We want to remind the public that Cumbria is experiencing heavy rainfall which is making the county’s roads extremely unsafe”.

Around 19,000 customers in Lancaster are being serviced by generators, and more such units are being brought in for these homes.

Meanwhile, some 1,047 properties remained without power in Cumbria.

On Monday, a business in Carlisle had £4,000 in cash and alcohol stolen, while tools valued at £3,000 were stolen the same day in Penrith.

After Christmas, those badly affected by flooding, will be able to apply for an additional €15,000, following a detailed assessment.

Eden Bridge remains closed, while Eamont Bridge near Penrith has been reclosed to allow for further inspection, Cumbria County Council said.

As of Wednesday afternoon, there was one severe flood warning – indicating danger to life – in place in northwest England for the area covering part of St. Michaels.

“It s an absolutely horrific thing to happen and for some of these people it s not the first time it s happened”, Cameron said, adding that the Environment Agency would study how to improve flood barriers. Its teams are continuing to check and maintain flood defences, clear blockages in rivers, put up temporary defences, monitor water levels and work with local flood wardens in the areas worst affected.
