NASCAR used the MI race as an experiment aimed at lowering downforce with a shorter rear spoiler and smaller front splitter.
Yet, Joey Logano thwarted any idea of suspense as he dominated the final seven laps off a restart to win the FireKeepers Casino 400.
“We’ve been knocking on the door for a win all season”, Logano said in his post-race interview on Fox Sports 1.
“Everyone knows that this is Ford’s backyard and Roger’s (Penske) backyard”, Logano said.
“We have to make a difference in the vehicle, manipulate things”. With a 50 percent chance of more rain Monday, IndyCar made a decision to resume the race August 27, which is during what had been an open weekend for the series.
After losing the lead to Elliott on a lap 116 restart, Logano got back up front for good on the next restart following a yellow flag on lap 148.
On the restart, Elliott was able to make a move into the top five.
Finishing second Sunday was Hendrick Motorsport’s youngster Chase Elliott in the No. 24 Chevrolet and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson third in the No. 42 Chevrolet, though his vehicle later failed post-race inspection.
“I absolutely love it”, said Tony Stewart, the seventh-place finisher.

The first caution didn’t slow down the race until lap 47, the cleanest start at MIS since 2009. Busch didn’t give up the lead and earned his first win of the season. That was 54 laps short of what was needed to make it an official race.
Logano was the old man among the top three drivers in the race. I think we talk about packages too much.. “Maybe everybody will be uncomfortable and we’ll just have to outdrive them”. “You could really see that today”. Kyle Larson finished third.
