EXPRESSIONS of condolences have been made to Adele Scalia, the Trinidad-born daughter-inlaw of late United States Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

“The Republican base doesn’t want a liberal justice, and they’re completely fine with the court having a vacancy for as long as is required to get a justice they believe is right”, Fagen said. If that is the reason, he should have let bygones be bygones, followed his own advice and attended Scalia’s funeral – thus extending an olive branch to the Republican Party.

Scalia was buried during a private ceremony.

Scalia, 79, died last weekend at a remote Texas ranch after spending almost three decades on the high court.

“We are gathered here because of one man, a man known personally to many of us, known only by reputation to many more; a man loved by many, scorned by others; a man known for great controversy and for great compassion”. That is why the next president should make the nominee. Vice President Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, attended the Mass.

Republican opposition to letting President Barack Obama replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia has sparked a constitutional clash over the president’s right to fill Supreme Court vacancies.

“God blessed dad with a deep Catholic faith”, he said, and a love of country – a blessing that’s lost “when faith is banned from the public square”. He was a devout Catholic and was the member of the Supreme Court most vocal about his religion.

While some Republicans have said Obama shouldn’t be the one to pick Scalia’s replacement on the bench, he has begun weighing his options on a nominee, CNN reported.

NPR intern Samantha Del Duca spoke to Ben Williams, the bagpipe player, who said he is a former history teacher who taught government and politics in southern Maryland – and who now sees an “intolerable” amount of political division in the U.S.

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (C) arrives for the funeral of fellow Associate Justice Antonin Scalia at the the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

In his homily, Rev. Scalia subtly acknowledged his father’s controversial legacy on the Supreme Court.

During his homily, Scalia’s son recalled how his father reacted once after accidentally standing in his son’s confessional line. “The justice said: “‘Like heck if I’m confessing to you.'” Paul Scalia joked that “the Roman collar was not a shield against his criticism”. “The feeling was mutual”.

“Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us”, Thomas read from the Biblical book of Romans.

Eight Supreme Court police officers serving as pallbearers then carried the casket, draped in a US flag, from a funeral home limousine up the stairs and into the building.

They wheeled the casket up the center aisle of the church past dignitaries including Attorney General Loretta Lynch, former Vice President Dick Cheney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, retired Justices John Paul Stevens, 95, and David Souter, 76, and other federal judges.
