Three Dead After Disgruntled Ex-Boyfriend Reportedly Murders Student Athlete
Police said former SUNY Geneseo student Colin Kingston, 24, committed suicide after he fatally stabbed former girlfriend Kelsey Annese and Matthew Hutchinson, a man she was with at the time.

According to police, Kingston, who recently broke up with Annese after a three-year relationship, brought a “large knife” to the home and confronted Annese and Hutchinson and an altercation ensued.
“Mr. Kingston was distraught over the breakup, which led to the events of yesterday”, Szczesniak said. Kingston called his father before killing himself, Szczensiak said. All indications are that Mr. Kingston used the same knife to take his own life, Szczensiak said.
Like Hutchinson, Annese was a student athlete at SUNY, playing on the women’s basketball team. Kingston, a former student at the school, killed them both.
An obviously shaken SUNY Geneseo President Denise Battles, who just assumed the presidency past year, said the deaths are “heartbreaking” and said it is a “profoundly sad day”.
Matthew Hutchinson was a senior from North Vancouver, British Columbia, and a member of the hockey team. He was also a member of the Geneseo volunteer fire department.
The couple may have been asleep when Kingston entered the woman’s room in a house where female basketball players lived. They have provided useful information in reducing the concern of a very anxious community. “It’s one that I’m sure with some time and some healing that hopefully, this can be a learning experience for some young people, too, things, other alternatives maybe that they can do instead of [resorting] to that act of violence”.
The flag at College Circle has been lowered to half staff, a remembrance service is planned for 7 p.m. Wednesday, and classes for the spring semester will start Tuesday as scheduled.
“We think our students will be comforted by keeping as much stability in their life as possible, even during a hard period of mourning”, said Battles.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the Geneseo Police Department, the New York State Police, the Livingston County District Attorney’s Office and SUNY University Police Department have all been part of the investigation.
According to the profile, Annese, who has two siblings, was majoring in psychology and childhood education/special education.
“Kelsey will always be one of my all-time favorite players not because of anything she will have her name next to in the record book, but because of the type of person she was”, Hemer said.
Hours before her death, Annese, a senior guard and team captain, played in a winning match against Buffalo State.

The fire department reached out to Hutchinson’s hockey teammates for a Canadian flag, that is now flying outside the department. He was a geography major with a minor in business.
