Three Florida players to miss season opener vs. New Mexico State

The University Athletic Association announced that receiver Latroy Pittman, defensive lineman Alex McCalister, and defensive back Marcus Maye will not play in the game due to “Athletic Department policy”.

McCallister, a redshirt junior, had six sacks last season.

UF didn’t provide any more information about the decision to hold the trio out of the September 5 season opener against New Mexico State.

Both McCalister and Maye are projected to start for the Gators defense in 2015. “Maye, a 6’0”, 207-pound junior from Melbourne, Florida, started nine games for the Gators at safety and nickelback last season and recorded 62 tackles, two pass deflections and one interception.

Pittman has caught 19 passes for 188 yards in his first three years, serving mostly as a role player. The Aggies lost 10 games in a row to finish the 2014 season 2-10, so I wouldn’t expect them to spoil Jim McElwain’s Florida coaching debut.
