Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker issued a statement by Twitter, crediting the responding officers with saving others from harm.

In a press release, the Antigo School District says the quick action of the Antigo Police “prevented what might have otherwise been a disaster of unimaginable proportions”. Police identified the suspect as 18-year-old Jakob Wagner.

ANTIGO (WKOW) – State officials are taking over an investigation into a shooting outside a prom in North Central Wisconsin.

Dakotta Mills said he had known Wagner since sixth grade and considered him a foster brother. He said Wagner was raised by his mother and grandparents and was still living at home.

Dakota mentioned that Jakob Wagner had an interest in guns and he wanted to go out hunting, but he was not sure if Jakob could afford to buy a gun. He used to attend Antigo High School, police Chief Eric Roller said.

Police returned fire, fatally wounding Wagner. He said the school of about 750 students will have counselors available when classes resume Monday.

Deep, the junior class president, had helped with the planning and setup in the weeks leading up to prom.

He is a former pupil of Antigo who graduated past year, according to reports.

A friend said Wagner loved video games, hanging out with friends and music.

The district said in a statement that Wagner had approached the school with a high-powered rifle and a large ammunition clip.

“There will also be heightened police presence around the high school for the next few days to lend support”.

Two students were shot as they left the school.

The victims, who were shot as they left a building where they had been celebrating prom, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.

Another school district employee tells NewsChannel 7 that the district is meeting at 3p.m. Sunday to discuss Saturday’s incident. They say he died after shots were fired back at him by police.

An autopsy on Wagner was scheduled for Sunday afternoon, Langlade County Coroner Larry Shadick said. Two high teens, one male and one female, have so far died due to the shootings, according to a report from the WSAW News,.

All three were taken to a hospital.

Officers were in the parking lot patrolling the event when they heard the gunshots.

When the shooting began, law enforcement descended on the scene, setting up a perimeter and moving students to a corner, Brandon Irish, a DJ at the prom, told CNN.

The relationship between the shooter and the victims was not immediately clear as of early Sunday morning, according to Roller.

“I think it is something that no one would have imagined, what these kids are going through, the victims family the shooters family and just the whole community”, said Amy Converse who was attending a vigil. The other victim was taken to the hospital and released.
