The shooting took place on Tuesday at a Roma camp in France’s Roye commune, the prefecture reports.

Two policeman are also among the injured as well as the child and the gunman himself, the newspaper said.

The shootings took place near the town of Roye, approximately 110km north of Paris.

“Once again the security forces have demonstrated their courage”, the interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, said.

One of two police who were fired upon by the attacker died of his injuries. “A man has killed a 6-month-baby in cold blood”, he said.

Those injured have since been rushed by a helicopter to University Hospital of Amiens where they are receiving treatment.
