Three MPs quit UK Labour party in protest after reshuffle

The North Durham MP also joined calls for her to return donations from a law firm facing disciplinary action over its role in an official inquiry into allegations of murder and torture by the British military.

The donation, paid by Leigh Day and Co, was to pay for a legal research assistant for her office.

The ousted MP said this week that the front bench reshuffle had hindered the prospect of the “new politics” promised by Mr Corbyn, whose promises that “room for a little dissent” had proved unreliable.

Labour deputy leader Tom Watson led the praise for the ousted frontbencher. But, Ms Thornberry was unexpectedly appointed late last night.

The three walked out with the ink barely dry on a shadow cabinet reshuffle criticised by MPs after the promotion of anti-Trident MP Emily Thornberry to shadow defence secretary.

He confirmed that Mr McFadden had been sacked for “a number of acts of disloyalty”, including his comments about terrorism.

After a long deliberation period, Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn sacked his European Union policy chief and moved his defense spokeswoman to another position in an attempt to tighten control over Britain’s main opposition party.

Mr Corbyn stopped short of shifting Hilary Benn from his position as shadow foreign secretary despite their high-profile clash over Syria air strikes.

Given the reshuffle, Cameron said Corbyn “couldn’t run anything”, let alone the government.

I am determined to continue making the case for Labour to have strong, credible defence and security policies, and I feel that the most effective way for me to continue to do this is from the backbenches.

Mr Jones’ resignation came on the back of two further shadow cabinet resignations this morning.

Uncertainty still surrounds the fate of shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn (left).

The PM replied: “I have the greatest sympathy with anyone who has been flooded and we have to do what it takes to get to people and get communities back on their feet”.

But Mr Jones said that was not true and that she had been moved from the defence brief against her will.

The Prime Minister defended his record on flood defences as Mr Corbyn attacked the Government for cancelling a scheme in Leeds and turning down applications to improve protection in York and Cumbria, which have been deluged in recent weeks.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell dismissed the trio who have quit as part of a “narrow right-wing clique”.

Former London mayor Ken Livingstone said Labour MPs have no right to override the wishes of the party’s membership on policy. But Mr Lansman claimed that his outspoken interventions had done his leader “a disservice”.

Although I was personally against the proposal to extend airstrikes into Syria, I can not in good conscience endorse the world view of the Stop the War Coalition, who I believe to be fundamentally wrong in their assessment and understanding of the threats the United Kingdom faces.

In his parting shot Mr Jones also accused the party leadership of dishonesty. Mr Burnham had insisted on a job for his friend as a condition for taking a role in the Shadow Cabinet last September.

“I finally signed it off just before I got up to speak”.
