The recent surge in violence between Israelis and Palestinians continued Saturday with three Palestinians being shot and killed after trying to attack Israelis in three separate incidents, according to Israeli officials.
Over the past month, eight Israelis have died in Palestinian attacks, a lot of them stabbings.
The Palestinian fears have been fueled by a growing number of Jews visiting the compound in recent months, especially during holidays, with the encouragement of Jewish activists groups and senior government officials.
The guard shot and wounded the man, then killed him after the man tried again to stab him, the Israeli military claimed.
The Israeli deputy ambassador to the United Nations, David Roet, defended Israel’s approach, saying it faced an enemy “willing to die in order to kill” and was “responding proportionately”. The Palestinian journalists’ syndicate later said the man was not a journalist and did not work for any media outlet.
The secretary-general “welcomes (Palestinian) President Mahmoud Abbas’ immediate condemnation of the attack and his announcement that a committee has been established to conduct a full investigation of this crime”, said a statement issued here by Ban’s spokesman.
Reuters television footage showed the Palestinian rolling on the ground and surrounded by Israeli troops after the attack.
“Over time, the only way that Israel is going to be truly secure, and the only way the Palestinians will be able to meet the aspirations of their people, is if they are two states living side by side in peace and security”, Obama said.
(Vatican Radio) The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem on Friday released a statement condemning the fire attack at Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus.
Her family told Ma’an new agency they were informed by Israeli authorities that their daughter had been killed after she stabbed a soldier.
It has deployed soldiers in Israeli cities and erected concrete barriers outside a few Arab neighborhoods of east Jerusalem, where most of the attacks have originated. Two of the casualties, a pregnant woman and her two-year-old daughter, were killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip on October 11, which came in response to an earlier rocket attack.
U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday expressed concern about the outbreak of violence, calling on regional leaders to “tamp down” on rhetoric that might feed “violence or anger or misunderstanding”.
This news comes after the IDF said Palestinians set the holy site of Joseph’s Tomb on fire.
The site is located in an area under Palestinian self-rule and visits by Jews are coordinated between Palestinian security forces and Israeli troops.
